Holding Judgement

I went to the lake yesterday.  Good thing I went yesterday.  It was to be the start of quite a long spell of good weather.  But this morning, woke to showers and cloudiness.  Later it was still cloudy but warm off and on, not to 80 but almost like a thunderstorm would hit.

So it was good I went yesterday and I suppose I should watch the news to find what the hell happened to make the weather change from the forecast.

Like its infrequent.

The lake is still clogged in wood along its shores.   There were many new trees fallen from the shore down into the lake.   But the worst of it all was encountering suds in many places and finding the waters a murky green instead of clear as they usually are this time of year.

It was disturbing to me.  I had intentioned to swim but could not bring myself to swim because of the suds where I usually swim.   I thought, has anyone tested this water, since that big drawdown and all the dead fish that ended up in Foster, thousands upon thousands of them?

I'd also seen when someone posted the water wasn't looking right on the Santiam river above Foster, that there'd been a slide or something off a tributary creek of the river and they sent a photo of nearly creamy white water in that creek from the slide allegedly, but that wasn't normal looking either, even after a slide.

I was on the lake about three or four hours and came home and thought will I ever go up there again.  Yes, I will, to see if the water quality improves any.

I looked up the photos from above Foster, but not on the Green Peter side, on the S. Santiam that feeds Foster.  Sweet Home city posted photos on facebook of where Trout Creek enters the south Santiam and whatever happened to Trout Creek turned the water yucky.  They think its from a slide into the creek.   The photos below were taken by I don't know who, up at the confluence of Trout Creek and the S. Santiam.   So with that pouring into the S. Santiam, then into Foster reservoir and this just a week ago, I can understand why Foster isn't normal currently.

Filthy Trout Creek water pouring into S. Santiam.

The below photo was taken by someone of the S. Santiam near Cascadia, posted in a Sweet Home facebook group and askiing what was wrong with the river water, on May 30.    That's when the city replied it was due to a slide or something that happened up in the wilderness area and affected Trout Creek.

Anyhow, I believe this is likely what has affected Foster for now.

This is when I first arrived.  I was excited to be there but already saw the off color water.  Green.

Trees down along banks

And the suds bubbles speckling the water.  WTF.

I didn't swim in it.  I took a shower and washed my clothes once home.  But what in the world.

  1. That is so very sad. And bad. I hope the water quality improves dramatically - for you and for everything that lives near or in it.

    1. It was depressing, to say the least.

  2. I don't blame you for not swimming. I would not have either. It seems draining the lake was not a good idea. Who would have thought! Indirectly it could have caused what happened in Trout Creek. Faster water flow because of lower the lower lake levels?

    1. I would guess something like that Andrew, but I wish I knew if some agency is testing that water.

  3. I don't think I would want to swim in that water, either. Hopefully, things will clear up with time.

  5. Weird. One little thing can influence the whole river, so perhaps you might not find out what it was. I hope things clear up sooner rather than later.

    1. Yeah, who knows. I read online that suds on a river or lake are the result of organic matter decaying.
