I've been reading a series of books all summer by Lousie Penny.
Her inspector Gamache series. I saw the author recommended on a tiktok book review site and got the first two in the Gamache series on thriftbooks. Later this summer when attempting to continue the series I experienced two unfortunate errors with thriftbooks orders and am not so thrilled to use the site again to continue.
I find the series heartwarming and satisfyiing. Inspector Gamache lives in Montreal and is the head of Quebecs celebrated surete homicide division. But the surete are not perfect and corruption has creeped in, which plays a major role in several of the books when the inspector, honest to the core, attempts to clean out the rot in his own beloved department.
He finds himself often solving murders in the idealic village of Three Pines, where there is no cell reception and people gather in Oliver and Gabri's bistro evenings and get books at Myrna's bookstore. She lives in the loft over the bookstore. Peter and Clara are married artists. And polar opposites. Old as the hills sour grapes Ruth is a poet, who eventually hatches a rejected duckling egg and Rosa, the duck, is now always with Ruth, the cantakerous, vulgar old poet. There's a woodworker in the village who swears trees talk and scream when cut. He had been a forester but had to quit one day when he "heard the trees screaming". Now he builds beautiful furniture from downed wood. He is accepted matter of factly too, as a respected and helpful community member.
There are cozy descriptions of food and furnishings and chairs and fireplaces that make me feel the warmth of the village, comfort food and deep friendships that exist despite the faults of one another. That is, if this perfect peaceful little village didn't have such a high murder rate.
Ha!! Always something.
Gamache himself is kind, smart, fair and brave and always quoting poetry or history and loves Quebec with all his heart.
Eventually as the series progresses Gamache and his wife move to Three Pines, the village where he's spent so much time already and found such deep and lasting friendships.
You might like the series if you want something a little different, a little deeper, and a little quirkier than the average detective series.

| This is the next in the series I'll read |
This morning, Tempest, the mom of the river path kittens, who are now with a neighbor, left for a barn home found by Silverton Cat Rescue. They worked hard to find a place for her and I appreciate that help so much. I took her up to Salem to meet up with them and hand her over. I got up at 4:00 a.m. and set a trap in the bathroom, with tuna. And when my alarm went off again at 6:30, she was in it, sleeping by then. I flea treated her through the trap, then transferred her from trap to carrier to head up to Salem.
So long Tempest and good luck.

This "Devil Cat" has led a tough life! He feels the need to make sure he doesn't go through the same experience again and again. Very sad.
ReplyDeleteI heard he was badly abused at his first home, by the family kids, so they kicked him out. Damage done to his psychic. The man at the end was very sweet. Fritter had come through the fence seeking help on the block after kicked out at the apartments and the first house he encountered did help him, even let him inside. How horrible it must have been for Fritter to then have his security ripped away again when the man died. He's not had it easy with humans.
DeleteThanks for the book review. Fritter almost sounds like he brings bad luck wherever he goes!
ReplyDeleteNo, I think Fritter is a good luck charm, at least on this block because the people here take care of him despite himself. Or we're really suckers and he plans to kill us all.
DeleteI hope you enjoy the newest book. It's great when you find a series you connect with. It sounds like Fritter's a bad luck cat. That's a lot of terrible with his former caretakers.
ReplyDeleteIt must be satisfying when things work out so well. The detective book sounds quite interesting.
ReplyDeleteI don't get many channels and now things around here are getting so expensive, but our lovely city council has decided, 'not expensive enough' and decided to add yet another fee to our monthly water bills, already very very high. So, I'm cancelling netflix to offset half the city's new fee add on. So I read instead of watching anything on the tele.
DeleteI read the first of the series years ago and enjoyed it. However, I never followed up with the others. At that point in time, I didn't have as much time to read and I would usually just read one or two from a series. I should go back and read more of them now. It was a very popular series at the library, and I know several people who have read them all. Thanks for reminding me about them.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I'll finish the series. Sometimes it seems like a good series should end but then goes on and on and the storyline becomes less and less interesting. Like the Inspector Montalbano series. The last book was the most disappointing in that series.
DeleteIt's so said to hear about Fritter's hard life.
ReplyDeleteHe's had it terribly rough.
DeleteI have read a few of her Gamache books. Amazon even made a tv show called Three Pines which unfortunately just lasted one season but I thought it was good.
ReplyDeleteI've discovered a lot of movies/shows made by amazon are very bad. I can usually tell with the first music. The background music sounds like it came off a soundtrack vending machine in a cheap bar or someone's basement.
DeleteSome of my favorite authors wrote some pretty cringe worthy material as they aged. I suppose it's tough for them to stop, partly due to ego but especially when others making money have zero incentive to advise them. You've shared a lot of ups and downs, my dear. I wish you all the best.
ReplyDeleteYes, been a busy and fairly tough couple of weeks. I think I need some time off again.
