I've taken three more trips to the Reservoir. Only one to get in the water.
I went to check out some cats someone posted widely about, at a boat ramp there. I never found them.
The first time I checked to see if I could find them was last weekend. My neighbor wanted to drive up. We were going to leave at 1:00, which turned into after 5:00 since in the meantime, she went somewhere with her roommate.
So she drove her car, me as passenger. I showed her Caulkins boat ramp. Then we drove to the other side, to see Lewis Creek, but that's a fee day use area and despite the late hour, the fee booth at entrance was still manned. The attendant let us drive through the parking lot so we could turn around and the neighbor could see a bit of it that way.
Then we drove to Gedney boat ramp which was jammed in boats and trailers everywhere probably because its still free to launch there, and I looked where the photo of the mother cat and kittens was taken but saw nothing. But it was so busy, that would be the norm, to not see any homeless cats when its that crowded.
Then we drove up to Sunnyside at the end of the lake Quartzville road side. They're getting an RV soon, and she wanted to see the campground, to see if its somewhere they want to camp. This place too has a fee to enter and this time it was a booth boy and he was radical that we could not go beyond the booth without paying the $7 fee. He suggested she park on the road and walk down and through. She pointed out her disabled park permit and explained she couldn't walk but he told us to turn around immediately. Ok. Whatever.
After that we drove on up to Green Peter reservoir, above Foster Reservoir. It's very low, with it being now draining, to keep Foster full and due to the fishing people groups lawsuits. The long steep dry brown banks were terribly unappealing. We let the dog out to run some at a pullout while she took pictures. She got a taste of the driving that goes on up Quartzville, when two different cars passed her on double yellow lines and sharp curves. Yup. That's the kind of dangerous shit that goes on up there.
My second trip up was a couple days later, evening, no sign of any cats at Gedney again. I set a trap but it was pointless. Then a friend sent me a screen shot of comments following the same picture of cats and post about them from a Sweet HOme group. Seems they have a feeder, so I messaged her and she messaged back by the time I got home that she'd get them fixed at some point, when the mom trusted her a little more. I offered my nonprofits' help with costs, when she's ready and otherwise will remain out of it.
But the twilight peace at Foster was so intoxicating I determined I'd go back up that time of day with my kayak.

The third trip I took was up was with the friend who has to drive, or she gets carsick. She also cannot kayak or even be on a tube in the water because she gets seasick. But she likes to stand in the water. To go, I have to load my car, then unload it at her place, then load it back into her pickup, so she can drive, due to the carsick thing. I should have just left the kayak behind. I barely used it while there since she doesn't leave the beach area. Would seem rude to take off on the kayak. Same thing on way back, unload all my stuff, including the kayak, at her place, load back into my car. It's too much work, if I take much at all, like the kayak.
We only stayed a couple of hours, so she could be out in the water.
I thought I was going to the lake today again. The neighbors were supposed to get their RV today. They said after which they wanted to go to Lewis Creek, up at the lake, take the kayaks (they have a friend with two) and have a picnic. Lots of planning then fast, only to have it all cancelled last minute. Ok. Inflate, excited over the prospects. Deflate, fast.
Sam is old and losing ground. I have to give him sub cu fluids now several times per week. I know it won't be long til we say goodbye.
My old old crew here. Alexi is old too. Shady is ancient. Tugs and Mums are ancient. Starr and Teddy are ancient. Juno isn't young, nor Meadow, my two Siamese mix gals. Oh my oh my.
My dear Peeman Sam |
That's it for today. Dangerous to sit here at my computer anymore. The chair is about to break and I have to find another. This one is ancient, was given to me maybe ten or more years back by someone replacing this one for a new one. But it's going to break off and that could hurt bad so I need to dump it but have nothing to replace it with right yet.
You never stay still for long. Glad you were able to get to the lake with some friends.
ReplyDeleteNo, its summer and I feel the pressure to enjoy every day we have sun to the max! I want to think about these fun times this winter, during the long gray.
DeleteI am glad that you got to the reservoir and love your furry family. It is hard (so very hard) to watch them fail though.
ReplyDeleteI do love them so much!
DeleteI know you do.
DeleteGlad to hear someone will take care of the boat ramp cats. One less thing for you to worry about. At least you're getting out there. That must be nice, not to be stuck at home every day.
ReplyDeleteIts super nice to get out. I'm old, have to enjoy every moment I can!
DeleteLuckily for the cats, Mom Strayer isn't quite ancient yet.
ReplyDeleteHaha, Andrew, not quite. Doing all I can to enjoy life too.
DeleteI am sorry about the cancelled plans and that you keep suffering losses. ~hugs~ Your crew looks fantastic, especially considering most of their ages; it's a testament to your excellent care. I would give each willing kitty a good scritch if I could. Be well, my dear.
ReplyDeleteIt's disappointing but my neighbors are older than I am, and one of them disabled, so no big deal, just trying to stay flexible if it ever works out. I was disappointed. I'd love to go on a picnic with someone.
