Off to Portland for a Trap Day

Well, since I can't get spots for local cats, I headed up to Portland to help another group catch cats at a trailer park there.

I left at 5:30, got lost twice (thanks google maps app), but made it there by just after 7:00 anyhow, avoiding the freeway by jumping off it north of Salem for the backroads.  Did the same thing on the way home.

By the time I left and was driving home, the freeway was probably clear of jams.   I didn't get home til almost 9:00 pm.

It was very hectic and chaotic.  I thought it was going to be really organized with lots of help.  Not so much.   An already exhausted volunteer trapper was there when I arrived.  There were few traps and we filled those rather quickly.   She scrounged more, however.  It was just me or her and I for most of the day.

The tenants, in this 55 and up park, seemed bored and very very interested in the trapping.  Interested to the point, some of them, of drastically interfering.   I could go into details because its kind of hilarious now, but I'm too tired.

I think between Jessica and I we caught over 40 cats and kittens.   It became hot and I nearly collapsed twice, from a combination of overexertion (running with cats in traps), dehydration and no food.

But another volunteer arrived and immediately took off to get me food and cold drinks.  I turned into another person after I consumed about three bottles of liquid.  And some food.

That was very sweet of her to recognize I was by then unable to go for myself.

I waited to drive home til I knew the traffic situation would not be so bad.

I had a terrific day.  I don't care about the hard parts of it, just that all those cats have been caught and now there are different folk there trying to catch more and also I met some new people and enjoyed meeting new people.  They were really nice to me, even though I think I was near twice most of their ages.  Or at least had 20 plus years on most.

I don't get to see that many people so today was great.

  1. It sounds like an excellent day. Yes you worked hard (as usual) but you have made lots of cats live's better AND met more people. Which is lovely.

  2. It is nice for you to come across good people. As an older person experienced with trapping, they should be nice to you, and respect you for your skills. It is also good to know there are younger people interested in trapping and desexing.

  3. Wow. Over 40 cats! You provided a much needed service to that neighborhood. Will most of those cats be rehomed?

    1. They will find homes for the kittens but the adults will be fixed and returned.

    1. Yeah, you said it, getting out of the house, seeing a lot of nice people, that was great, just what I needed. Helping cats was the bonus.

  5. How lovely. Maybe they'll be trapping cats again and you can help. You're the experienced trapper at this point. You must tell us those stories, but tomorrow or the next day once you've fully rested up.

    1. Rested up? What's that! I feel this age related pressure to do everything I can before my time's up.
