Ruined Trap

Tuesday, after taking Maybellene, now named Madeline, to Keitha's Kitties, along with the three boy kittens from the other Cascadia mom, I took the trap she'd been in out of the car.

But I left it out, on the far side of the car.  I tried to tell myself to go get it later on, just before bed, or I'd forget it I knew, and probably hit it with my car.

I was tired.  That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

I left it out there, far side of the car.

I went to go get groceries the next day.  I got in and turned the wheels so I could make the turn down the driveway to back out.  Crunch!

I quickly stopped and instantly remembered the trap I'd left on the other side of the car.  Too late.  I'd hit it with the turned right front tire.

Well, this is what it looked like.

That's the front top of the trap, crushed in and to the side.  Looks like a goner.  Annihilated!

However, I can't let things go that easy and I don't have that many traps anymore.  Some I've given away by now to others who needed traps to use.   So, I used some big fence staples to staple it to the work bench and then used wire cutters to remove the smushed door of the trap.  Its two pieces were pushed in and bent.

Now I'm slowly trying to straighten it using my car door jack.  I'll probably forget to put the door jack back in the car and end up in a jam that way, with a flat tire somewhere.  That's my luck.

I've got it partly unscrunched so far.  I suppose if I can get it mostly unscrunched I'll build an external form to fit tightly around it and pound it out from the inside.  I have minimal tools and skills but do the best I can to salvage what I can.  Traps are expensive.

If I get it functioning again, I'll take another photo.

Meanwhile, its pouring outside.  The Waterloo lady said the park is flooding and the river below the park is up to back decks on houses near the river.

  1. I am so sorry. And if anyone can fix it, you can.

As I read what you had done, I knew you would repair it and you are on the way. Perfectly straight sides probably don't matter much to cats.

    1. I suppose by now you would quickly know I'd try to fix it. No, cats don't care, as long as the door will function and the trigger plate, it will be good. I've got another crooked trap, from way back that was caught between my car and the garage door. I still use it, but with a string trigger plate rod. The cats kinda like its crook in the middle.

  3. I can only imagine the feeling you had when you heard that crunch, but how clever you are to use the car jack to try to salvage it. Good luck.

    1. I don't know why I thought of the car jack. They are extremely useful. I watched a video last fall on how to make a cider press with one.

  4. Yikes, what a mess. Sorry that happened. At least it's wire, so it can be unbent.

  5. We had such an incident with a tomato cage. Less expensive, for sure, but my heart sank at worry the car suffered damage. I expected my husband to know better. lol If anyone can fix this trap, it's you. Best wishes!

    1. Hey, maybe I could use some of my old traps for tomato cages! I was worried too, about my car tire, but so far, still is holding air. Whew!

  6. Please know, my dear, that I have comment monitoring set but often forget to check. ~shakes head~ So whether or not yours publish right away might be my fault. And, by the way, you are worth more than a truckload of gold. :D

    1. It wasn't your blog that happened. It seems to happen in the morning, when the antivirus thing is scanning. I have to turn off the antivirus to stream, not sure why on that either.

    1. Not completely back to shape yet, but getting there. Had to take a break and carry the car jack for the trip to Cascadia and today, the trip to the clinic. I've had too many flats not to carry that jack.
