Good News Bad News

So I dropped off the car this afternoon to get the new bearing.  I got a call later though, said there was nothing wrong with the bearing, or the tie rods.

Ok what?   Same shop told me yesterday they were all bad.   The ticking noise when the wheel was spun in neutral?  Maybe a transmission problem I guess they implied, but not the bearing.   And the tierods do not have play in them as I was told yesterday.   OK what?

Ok, is it ok to drive or?  We can't tell you that.  How about a hint?  Go ahead and drive it.  Thanks.

They advised me to take it to a full service shop.  But for what?  Is there really something wrong or was that a rock all along that made the whoop whooping sound, that began intermittently Saturday, after the trapping up that long gravel drive, which made me think I indeed must have a road rock stuck somewhere on the wheel, maybe under a brake pad, something, because the sound was against something rotating and speeded up if the car did.  But I really have no clue.

My brother says my problem is I haven't got the radio loud enough when I drive.  Ok, I'll turn it up and just forget about everything.

I don't like mysterious noises in an old car.  They scare me.  But if there's nothing wrong to be found, I will turn up the radio.  Oh, I got a lug wrench at least for the car.  If I have a flat, I'm ready for that.

  1. How frustrating for you. Definitely good news, bad news. And at least they didn't replace bearings that don't need it.

    1. Yup, good news there. I'm going to get the tires rotated next week. Could help. Maybe.

  2. Cars are pain at time. It seem like I'm always checking the oil and such. I don't blow engine. Can't afford a car.

    1. They are a pain. But hey, a friend with a much much newer lower mileage car is also having trouble. She's currently driving a Uhaul truck as a rental waiting on hers to get fixed. It was much cheaper than a rental car.

    2. Never thought of renting a U-Haul truck just to drive around. You have a resourceful friend. Hope you can find out what's wrong with your car. It's nerve-racking to drive around worrying about when it might break down.

    3. What a bummer for both of you. Driving a Uhaul truck is very clever. I would never imagine it to be cheaper. Stay safe, my dear.

Honest car garage. Who would have thought! Turning up the radio is my partner's solution to any strange car sound, although it is a while since we have had a car old enough to make strange noises. Interesting about your friend's rental car costing more than a Uhaul truck. But I don't know what a Uhaul truck is.

    1. Yes, I was impressed and thankful too. Its not common. Uhaul's are generally rented when you move, moving vans, large trucks, to haul stuff. She doesn't like driving it, or worse, parking such a huge thing. Her truck quit starting, something in the anti theft system. My friend in Portland who has an almost new car, given her by her boyfriend, is also experiencing shut offs due to faulty anti theft system. Sometimes a nice old simple car is a blessing.

  5. Also, am going to try one more trick, just one more. I read online that if the lug nuts are off just one thread on one lug nut, it can cause such noise as I heard. The tire was removed to repair a flat only a few weeks back. I'll just take it off and put it back on. I'm not sure they took off that tire in checking it out yesterday. I don't know that, or if they just spun it and looked for play or whatever they do, when about to replace a wheel bearing.

  6. Yes - and one or more lug nuts can work off and rattle around inside the hubcap like dice on a roulette wheel - a sound that is regular and speeds up as you go faster. So make sure your wheel isn't ready to fall off (back when service stations worked on cars, this happened to my Mom's car...after the second time she not only knew what it was immediately but knew to find a new mechanic !)

    1. Did that, took off the tire, lug nuts fine, at least after I put them back on. Anyhow, looked real nice back of the brake rotor. Tie rod ends nice looking, transaxle end, if you ask me at least. I like a tidy looking underneath, lol. There were pebbles and rocks all over atop the suspension though. I picked them off. So I check my tire pressures and they're all at about 38.5 psi. that's almost ten psi higher than the recommended psi for the car, which is 29 psi cold. I dropped all four down to the recommended.

The Blues

The blues have taken hold.  The weather turned to crap after two decent days.  Well only one of those days turned out warm, without the win...
