I'm tired and feeling the effects of the last week, despite sleeping a lot.
The only race I really watched, intensely, believe it or not, was the mayor race for our small city. Why? Because the cat hater was running for Mayor. Infamous for his last February attempt to team up with a newcomer to town who wanted to kill all outside allowed cats, demand license fees for every cat and also require a cat to be on a leash even in your yard and on your own property.
The license fees would be used for the kill program.
Then a city councilor the guy jumped all over this and was to hold a public meeting on it in early March. Which, thankfully, Covid stopped in its tracks. I was never so relieved. I hate those public circuses that are filled with people yelling and venting and misinformation. They're useless.
But he ran for mayor and he won. And now I feel a terrible fear. I can't afford to license all my cats every year. That's expensive and requires a vet visit too. And its not right to pay fees that are used to kill other cats. I don't know that he will renew his efforts to do this or not. But I'm already having sleepless nights over it. So I don't know how to proceed.
I'll talk to my brother about it. He owns the house. I'm sure it would sell fast. Every house goes up for sale, bad condition or good, goes in days. The problem would be finding somewhere else to live.
My income won't even rent a place if I used it all for rent and lived without power or water. Or food, for that matter. Not the way rents have skyrocketed.
I don't know how fast these things can happen, if he does try to push that through, but he won't be mayor til next year, so I will have months, at the least.
I can't help but worry over it. I'm not going to play the Sophie's Choice game with my dear cats. I'll be long gone from Albany, with them somehow, before that could happen.
I will escape.
~hugs~
ReplyDeleteThanks, need that right now. A big hug.
DeleteDon't even think about it. What is the worst that can happen? Some time down the track you may received two days gaol for unpaid fines. Imagine the press free for all if they tried to remove your cats. Make sure you have a walking stick to hobble around on when the media arrive.
ReplyDeleteHa Andrew, you are funny! Yeah, I wouldn't pay. Couldn't.
DeleteAndrew I think you are right on the best reaction to such a threat. Thanks!
DeleteI can understand how fearful you must be about your new mayor. But hopefully, the cat population is not on the top of his agenda. How about you and the other rescuers get together and organize an information campaign to be ready in case you will have a fight on your hands? If push comes to shove, at the very least, maybe existing cats could be grandfathered in somehow.
ReplyDeleteIt was high on his pri list as city councilor last February with Covid roaring in, something I could not understand then. So yeah I'm not sure about his sanity.
DeleteI am so sorry to read this, and totally understand your fear.
ReplyDeleteAnd how I wish I had a solution to offer.
Thanks EC.
DeleteNo one should have to be put in a position where they have to decide whether a pet can stay or has to leave!
ReplyDeleteYou're darn right, Kathy.
DeleteI’ve never heard of politicians wanting outdoor cats killed. Cats go outside, that’s just what they do. That would never fly here in Texas.
ReplyDeleteYeah its nuts and I hope it doesn't fly here either.
