In January, I will have lived in this place 14 years.
That is the longest I've lived anywhere.
I lived with in my parents house 13 years before being shipped off to boarding school. I can't claim I really lived at home after being shipped off, not for long at a time. I spent some summers there after that but I didn't really feel like I lived there.
Time has flown by but my life before living here is just a memory blur now.
I like this house. It's home. I love it in fact. Maybe I'll have to leave it someday. I think of how much I like having a real home and then I think about all the people who lost theirs in just the wildfires in Oregon this summer and realize it could happen to most of us at any time, for all sorts of reasons. So enjoy it, I think to myself. Enjoy every minute of having a home.
My old cats are my family. I know I won't have most of them much longer. 14 years I've lived here and Comet came here with me.

Comet has always been a bully to other cats. When he was younger, he'd even attack them at their most vulnerable, when using the litter box, just for the heck of it. He's so old now. And yet the other day, I heard a yowling contest, and there was Comet in the hallway, standing over and yowling at poor Nemo, who was cowering. It's all in attitude.
Comet loved Miss Daisy so much. After she died he didn't come on the bed at night anymore, not until a few months ago, then he came up again, to be petted and sleep against.me. Slurpy was the closest to Miss Daisy and she has not come back on the bed at night since Miss Daisy died.

A happy and loud ghost cat sounds perfect to me. I would happily join the fun. And I still see some cats (long gone) out of the corner of my eye, and hear them in the dark hours...
ReplyDeleteI bet you do, EC. I don't know why lately I think I hear her, a couple times a week at least. I don't mind it, it makes me think of her and be happy.
DeleteI totally understand that. I think of them, I miss them and yes, I am happy.
DeleteNice to update us on your tribe.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm delinquent in that.
DeleteTime does seem to fly sometimes. 14 years is a long time, but that has given you time to make a home for you and your family. Cats live long at your house because you take such good care of them and they know you love them. And I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't Miss Daisy visiting from time to time.
ReplyDeleteDo you think it is her, L and L? I sure would love that. I don't think any of the cats ever want to leave here. They love it and its home to them and to me too. We've been together a very very long time, most of us. We're all old and quirky and creaky and like to nap now. And play.
DeleteI really like the idea of you haunting the place with sweet Miss Daisy. The whole crew would make a lovely racket. :) The thought of a bad adoption fit makes me sad. I had to answer all kinds of questions to adopt Tilly from the Humane Society. Luna and Jezebel arrived in other ways, but HS called my home phone (back when we had land phone lines!) before I even returned that same day, and all our kitties loved it here. You provide an excellent home, for sure. ~hugs~ Be well!
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid we'd not be very sneaky scary ghosts, more prone to leaving hairballs around, then cracking up over it among ourselves.
DeleteI am one who haven't moved all that much. Current place I been in for 20 years. But I have debated with my self and discuss with hubby about moving. Can't go until I retire in 2.5 to 5 years.
ReplyDelete20 years is awhile. I want to live here the rest of my life, but I know that may not happen. Whatever happens down the road, sure love living here right now.
