Two More Big Boys

There seem to be a lot of huge big males out all over, fighting, getting into trouble, causing sleeplessness in residents unfortunate enough to live in areas where people are not fixing their cats, and....spreading diseases, like FIV.

FIV is a virus cats get when they are bitten by an infected cat. Deep bite wounds males inflict on one another when they fight is the primary way FIV is spread.   It's so preventable, if people would just start fixing their boys.  There is a lot of FIV in this county.

You can't just fix your free roaming boy and think he'll be protected.  All the boys in the area need to be fixed.

I was back on the block where I just got two more boys fixed---that Lynx Point with half a rear leg, and the big black boy they call Laser.

She'd found out the tame gray tabby had been abandoned by a former girlfriend of someone on the block and Heartland Humane in Corvallis had said they could take Gideon.  She got him in a carrier and also got the big buff tux boy, Bubba, too.   I was not so sure Bubba wasn't already fixed and probably should have reached into the trap and felt him up but I didn't.  I figured I'd do that before the Monday appointments.  She wasn't supposed to even try for him til the weekend, so I wouldn't have to hold him for days, but I don't get listened to very often.

So I picked up both boys from her yesterday when she called and headed straight to Heartland from there, to drop off Gideon.  While there, I saw it was a surgery day and asked if Bubba could stay and be fixed and they agreed!  Whew!  No big male in my garage for days.

Bubba was in fact already fixed, but he did get his back shaved since he had some irritation or rash going on.  They believe it was a flea allergy thing however.   He did get all his vaccinations updated, flea treated and wormed, so even though he was already neutered, he sure needed those updates!
Bubba is fed as a stray there by several houses.

I tried to take him home last night but the sisters were not home, they were in Albany.  I thought about asking them to pick him up when they headed home, here, but they didn't offer, so I figured that would be a no go from the start.  Not many people feel inclined much to help, even when its their own block.

When I had tried to take him home, I saw yet another huge male headed for the sisters driveway.  He diverted to another yard when I drove up, and watched me from under some bushes.

New boy on the block
As for Gideon, the gray tabby, he's at Heartland Humane now, and good thing.  He tested positive for FIV.  Someone should have neutered him a long time ago.   They'll try to find him a home as a positive boy. I hope they are successful.  Thank you Heartland for taking on Gideon.  He is a sweetheart.

In other news, Walmart's cat food prices have jumped drastically.  Wet food cans (5.5 oz) went from $.48 a can to $.54 a can almost overnight.  That's a very large sudden increase.  I don't know if this has to do with tariffs or not.  I suspect it does.   But everything is going up fast here.  Like food prices have also skyrocketed.   I don't have any idea why.  I might try to buy up as much cat food now as I can, because if prices keep going up, I'm going to be out of luck.  I feed a lot of cats, and often when cats are here, to go to surgery, they can eat four to six cans each, in a couple of days because generally they are cats who never get enough where they're at.  At least when here, briefly, they get everything they can eat.   The wet food helps them keep hydrated too.   Anyhow--panic mode over increasing prices.

  1. I don't know what's going on with cat food prices because my cats are on prescription food only. Hopefully they will go back down soon.

I haven't heard mention of FIV here for years. I think it is a standard inoculation for a cat, but of course as you know, plenty of cats never go near a vet, until you get your hands on them.

    1. Maybe its been wiped out there. We don't innoculate for that here. There is a vaccine, but afterwards, your cat would always test positive for FIV, and I don't think it turned out to be effective, but I could be wrong.
