GM is attempting to buy out its older workforce with tempting cash payoffs, to those who will leave immediately and sever all ties to the company. Severing ties means walking away from retirement plans and post employment health insurance. The greatest amount, offered to those who have been with the company over ten years, is $140,000. That amount won't get a person far in retirement while also paying their own health care costs.
GM wants to hire new younger workers at far cheaper wages with lower benefits.
It's a catch 22, I suppose. The company likely won't survive without these cost cutting employee shedding. The new employees may get more reasonable wages/benefits than the older union workers. By reasonable I mean wages that allow the company to continue and prosper so that workers can prosper. Unions should not be so repressive that they strangle companies to death. It's like shooting yourself in the foot to spite your face.
I am a Cat Woman. My self-appointed mission in life is to save the feline world! To accomplish this mission, I get cats fixed. Perhaps my mission might be slightly delusional. This blog is a mishmash of wishful thinking, rants, experiences as I remember them and of course, cat stories and cat photos. I have a nonprofit now, to help keep the cats here cared for and to fix community cats. Happy Cat Club formed in 2015. Currently, we are on a mission to fix 10,000 cats.
