Damage Across State is Extensive

The cost of the high wind freezing storm that hit Oregon will be very high.

Power is still out for some.   I think six people were found dead of hypothermia.  I am amazed that number isn't much higher.  There was an all out effort to get people into warming shelters across the huge areas affected by the storm.  That effort no doubt saved lives.  Some refused help as always.

Three people were electrocuted when a power line hit their car.  A baby with the three was saved by a quick acting teenage neighbor.   She is a hero.

But this lady, in story, who seems so positive, had ten trees hit her house.  TEN!  She and her husband have been without power, without water, have broken pipes and she really doesn't know what to do.  Says she needs to find a big bag of money.   I feel bad for her.

Another man who had a tree or two crash through his house is lucky in one way.  He has an adult son who immediately caught a flight from the east coast where he lives to Portland, rented a Uhaul and went to help his dad move out what he could, all the while worried other trees would come crashing down.

The water is high at the park.   Yesterday once the HVAC man was gone, I had to finally get out of the house.

Dog park parking lot flooded

The above video is of the lower boat ramp area.  That picnic table is about to become history in its current location.

There are stubborn frozen spots out in the cat yard.   Tonight it will be freezing or below again.

The one nice thing about the frozen landscape that was my driveway----the ease of moving goods around it!

Power company workers, first responders, plumbers, tree companies----very busy tired people I bet.   On the other hand are small businesses that had to close due to the weather itself or because customers couldn't get out--they're hurting now and so are low wage workers who were told to stay home, by employers or who couldn't get to work.

Hopefully the weather will get back to winter gray drizzle icky normal now.   I don't mind cold so much, or even the isolation of a week house confined, but I can't really stand to think of others in the state suffering its worst effects or the animals and birds suffering.

  1. I am sorry that your state has been hit so hard.
Ten trees? That is SUPER unlucky.
Smiling at the ease of moving things on your driveway though.

  2. I have a FB friend who lives in Portland who has been showing pictures of trees down, etc. in his neighborhood. Lot's of detestation everywhere. It's frigid here with snow and wind. Last week it was flooding, but I don't think it is as bad as Oregon. Here's hoping that everyone can be on the road to recovery soon.

  4. That woman's predicament is awful. What a dreadful mess. The story reminds me of my envying a friend with a tree-filled yard near Dayton, Ohio. If they started crashing down... Ugh... And his home is generational, like this poor lady's. All the world's suffering can be overwhelming to consider, so thank you for sharing that video of you sliding a tote. :) We need to boost one another however we can; that heroic teenager took it to the highest level and I hope that baby finds a loving home. Hugs, my dear.

    1. To lose a generational house seems far worse to me. The baby has extended family, should grow up well loved.

  5. I'm just glad things are getting back to normal here. And I'm glad we missed most of the frozen rain, although we still have a bit of snow here and there.

    1. The ice buildup sure does cause mayhem with power lines and trees. Happy that's gone now here, for the most part and back to normal cold constant rain. How much snow did you get there?

Sunday I was so slow getting going after the late night Saturday. But after cleaning litterboxes, giving KMR to kittens, feeding the ferals...
