Sunday Cat Drama

There was drama Sunday.  Cat drama.

People, really!

Before I go trap Sunday morning I get an email from a Lebanon woman.  They feed cats but they're awful about getting them fixed or helping trap if I try.   In fact, they have traps but won't use them.   Instead they think I should sit out for hours while they watch from inside, or even play with kittens I'm trying to catch through the window with a laser pointer, distracting them from the drop trap.  And they have like a dozen or more of their own cats fixed, but not ear tipped, they won't keep inside when I try to trap.  So I gave up on them.  People need to participate.

Her email asked if I still caught cats, that they had a mom and kitten.

I had no clue what that meant, if they wanted me to trap a mom and kitten or had them contained.  I emailed back if they called me immediately, I might have spay spots available Monday.  I reminded them I don't take in cats.  I got no call.

But later in the day, after I'd taken a long nap, I see I've had a call from someone else.  I return the call and its a neighbor of this first household, and she has a cat and a kitten in a live trap already.  I said "Wtf, why would you trap a cat without a plan for what to do with the cat and kitten."   By this time, I had my Monday quota.

I didn't know then the kitten was only a couple weeks old.  They'd trapped the mom and stuck the one kitten in the live trap, which was not covered and had no paper lining it.  Once I realized this, I freaked out and a Lebanon lady, whose granddaughter lives next to the one who trapped, went and got the cat and kitten.  I was horrified to find them uncovered in my driveway, no paper in the trap, so the tiny kittens legs fell through the mesh.  I turned mom loose in my bathroom, with Skippy and Sprite, the jail kittens, with a large carrier for the kitten (and mom) to be in.  I was not happy with the woman who emailed nor the lady who trapped the mom with no plan then stuck a teensy kitten in with her, when mom was terrified, and could have crushed the kitten.   And wtf, I had told both I don't take in cats and here was a mom nursing a two week old kitten, making neither eligible for spay neuter.

The woman who trapped said she got bad info from the neighbor whom, she said, told her to just trap the mom, that there were programs.   The lady who trapped was tired of finding dead kittens in her yard, killed by her dogs.   I can understand that.

Mom went bat shit terrified, climbing the walls.  Skippy and Sprite were terrified.  It was not good.

I set up a cage, albeit not a good cage, since the good cage is loaned out again, and got Skippy set up in it, but Sprite by now was super scared so I just left her in the bathroom and I left all of them completely to themselves.   HOwever I was very concerned for that bottle babe as mom was not nursing her at all.

By Monday morning, I got the kitten who had been ignored by "mom" and KMR fed her.

She's so darn cute.  I took the five cats to the clinic and asked if they could do another, since by now I realized the mom was too wild to hold and that she was too scared to nurse her kitten.  Wouldn't work.  She just needed spayed and returned.  Best I could come up with.   The clinic said yes, they could do her also, if I got back there by 10 with her.  So off I went, leaving the five there from Clover Ridge, like a shot, back home, to contain her, which turned out to be rather easy, then back to the clinic, where she, and the five other females from Albany were spayed.  Yup, six females.

Jillian, fixed yesterday, returned this morning

In the meantime, I was madly texting trying to find someone to take Miss Bottle Baby.   Karen agreed to do so immediately, so once home, I got her and headed over to Karen's.  Karen loves bottle babes but is technically retired from rescue.  Today the kitten will move to an official foster and she will now become a Keithas Kitties foster although my nonprofit will pay for her spay and shots, once she's old enough.  Karen sent me this video of her.

It all worked out.  Sure, it was stressful.

The group scheduled to take on Sprite and Skippy today were unable to do so.  I only found out last night.  Sure, I was disappointed.

Today I suddenly got three cancellation spots for tomorrow.  The plan is to head off and try to trap three of the five kittens at the Lebanon complex.  I took their mom in to be fixed a few weeks back.

  1. What a great effort. Cat neglect seems to go hand in hand with stupidity.

    1. Probably would help the world out long run if many did get spayed/neutered (people that is).
