Easter Sunday.
The good thing about today is that last night a local rescue messaged to say they could take the two Junk Shop colony calicos. So this morning, I headed over there about 8:00 a.m. to get them. The pair are tame and among five calicos I trapped to be fixed originally there. One already went to Keithas Kitties. Two have since died. One of those two was killed on the highway and the other vanished. She was the sickest and likely died finally of dehydration and URI.
That left two calicos, both of whom are sickly. They're the only two still there who are not healthy. The rest of the cats look great. Including Sunny, whom I returned a couple days ago. Saw him this morning, first on the roof of the former junk shop, then staring at me from outside my car.
Many of the other cats showed up to eat under my drop trap, but the calicos were no shows.
Badger, the black boy, and Happy, the orange tabby girl. |

Jenga, another fixed girl |
This pair, Paleface and Mutesy, best friends, are adorable. |
Finally out came the junk shop guy, from the back trailer, said he knew where they were, and took off with one of my carriers. He came back with Slicker, the sickest of the two, in a carrier. Her breathing was so noisy with congestion.

Slicker's URI is life threatening. If I hadn't been able to get her out today, not sure she could have survived too many more days. |
He tried for Two Spot, the other calico, but couldn't get her into a carrier. The junk shop man was very nice to me this morning. He thanked me for doing all that I've done for them there, and then pulled out $20 and said "Happy Easter. I'd like to buy you lunch." And handed me the $20 for an Easter Lunch somewhere. It was such a nice gesture, given the difficulty I've had there, my eyes began to drip tears.
Later on, still holding out, because rescue vacancies often don't last long this time of year, wanting badly to get it done, I searched the property for the other calico and found her. She would not go into the carrier for me either though but was willing to follow me, calling her, to the drop trap, where I simply lowered it over her then transferred her out to a trap. And that was that. She was not upset about it. She's a sweetie and very adaptive and also in bad shape--skinny as a rail. Like Joe was, the black male, from there, who is now completely recovered and in a home.

This isn't a good photo of Two Spot |
I packed it in then, and took them off to Keitha's Kitties and hope for the best for them. At least they have a chance now. The last two surviving calicos from the colony.
To get to Lebanon, I drive down Columbus Street on the outskirts of south town, then make a left off it onto Seven Mile, to drive on out to the freeway and cross it, on the overpass, then on to highway 34 and Lebanon that way. As of Monday, I can't go that route.
Big huge 300 home development is going in on the fields across from Seven Mile. The first step is ripping out the road to put in sewer and water lines. No doubt this will be taxpayer funded. Anyhow, no I don't like the development is affecting my life. Ha! Not fair. I wonder how many times I'll go that way anyhow on auto pilot only to have to make a U turn.

A lot of equipment is set up over there, to start tearing things up |
I didn't go out to lunch with the $20, but I'm going out tomorrow. Figure it won't be so crowded tomorrow.
I am glad that you were able to finally capture both girls who now have a chance - and equally glad that you got lunch out of it.
ReplyDeleteMe too, on both accounts, EC .
DeleteJiggers has quite pretty markings and I like her white. Next time you despair at the human race and cats, remember the man who appreciated your efforts, as do we who donate.
ReplyDeleteThanks Andrew and thank you for your monthly!!!! I brag to people I have supporters in Australia. I think it sounds exotic and important.
DeleteA good day for all involved. The two calicos will get a chance to live now, and you're going to have lunch on the junk yard man. What are you going to have?
ReplyDeleteI got Chinese take out. Have leftovers too.
DeleteOh, wow! What a nice change of pace to be appreciated. ~hugs~ I wish all the best to the sweet survivors you've been able to help. Be well, my dear.
ReplyDeleteJiggers has beautiful markings.
