M is for Music

Yup, it's getting to the end of the day, and I haven't done the M post.

My mistake.

Ha, ha, ha.  Cracking Myself up.

I think I am going Mental, in fact.  Nothing new there.

This A to Z thing is sending me down the creek.  Off to the funny farm.

Ok, seriously now, M is for Music.   That'll do.

Who doesn't like Music?

Well my father didn't like music.  And although I was not musical I was forced to practice piano, growing up, an hour each day of the week, flute 1/2 per day and guitar 1/2 hour.  Did I mention I'm not musical?  And can't play any of those instruments now?  It was a colossal waste of childhood time.

Pure punishment.

My father would not allow us to listen to music in the house, except for his few records, which were terrible.  I went to a religious high school where music, unless approved religious music, was not allowed either.

Try being a teenager in America and music not a part of your life.  Not easy, rather bleak and horrible in fact.

We were always told popular music, if played backwards, would give messages from the devil.  I never bought that.

How would you even play it backwards?

My mother, in a grand gesture, defying her own husband, knew I liked Bruce Springsteen and bought me, for Christmas one year, his combo album, several albums of hits.  I had nowhere to listen to it, however.  I tried to sneak one record onto our old stereo in the living room, but my father marched in and shut it off and ordered me out.

I may not be musical but I love music.  I don't have much music in my life because I can't afford to buy any, but I watch and listen to youtube music all the time.

I used to love Moody Blues, Lyndyrd Skynyrd, The Doors, Bruce Springsteen, Jefferson Airplane, Three Dog Night, The Stones, I'm a rock and roller, classic rock. Love it.  Hate Country music.

I also like Jazz, Pop, Celtic, Blues, Reggae, Classical and Ballad.

I used to at least be able to play music in my car.  It has a CD player.  But as my car aged, the CD player began to eat CD's.  One time, a CD got stuck in there for three years, before I was able to get it out.  It was Pink Martini.  Someone told me if I sold the car I could say "Comes with CD".   Ha, ha, ha.

M is for Music!

  1. I am not Musical. And definitely Moving down the Mental spectrum.
I never acquired the music habit. I didn't like my parent's music (and wouldn't give it that name). And I don't like music as background. Which puts me in the Minority.

    1. I don't do background music either, distracts me. I only like to listen to it when I'm really into it.

I'm with you with your dislike of Country music. I don't much care for Western either :-P

  3. My car eats CD's also. There are three in there right now. I'm thinking about replacing it because this is the car we take on long trips and it sure is nice to listen to a book on CD when we go on them. However, I don't want to pay what the library charges to replace them when they are lost down the black hole. Haven't checked into how much it would cost to get it fixed yet.

    1. That's why I don't borrow audio books from the library for when driving. I love to listen to those books and do wish my car didn't kill CD's.

  4. I feel for you about the bleak childhood and wish you could buy music. Are there ever any free music shows you could attend? It comes to mind because today is Record Store Day and some of our Cincinnati stores are featuring free live shows. In case you are so inclined to perhaps check your area, here is a link: http://www.recordstoreday.com/Stores?state=OR&new_search= (I hope it works)

    1. I live in a conservative area, the shows are mostly country, although now and then, at the fair, they have a rock band or some other genre come in. Summers there is a weekly concert in a park, but its become so terribly crowded, without parking, its difficult to attend and the blanket people are out in force. They stake out their area with a blanket in the mornings, which is allowed, and then defend their blanket turf. Its pathetic. You can't touch an edge of their blankees without raising outrage.

I am Married to a Musician. He plays anything and everything, though he loves rockabilly the best. Yes, we like country-western. Our roots lie there, though we are aging hippies, rockers (classic).

    1. I was a hippy at heart, although I never came out of the closet back then, growing up in a highly conservative southern Oregon town, where hippies were virtually burned at the stake.

  6. Hi Strayer, I don't know if you remember, but I talked about felting with all of the cat hair you have at your house. Well, I just found a blog on the A-Z list that deals with just that. Here's the link if you're interested. http://www.craftingwithcathair.com/
