I got to go on a hike today, in the Jefferson Wilderness area. A ten mile hike, no less, and five of those miles were climbing up, to, eventually, the top of Grizzley Peak. On the way, we stopped at Pamelia Lake and I took a swim. Then we decided to go for the top, even though I haven't exercised for quite a long time. I made it. Coming down might have been worse, and hurt my knee more. We got back to the trailhead just as dusk was settling in. Boy, I'm really tired. It was so gorgeous.

Almost to the top of Grizzley Peak. Mt. Jefferson is across the way, peak shrouded in clouds.

My hiking partner and I at the top. Some Chicagoans took the photo.

Well, besides my bad knee taking a beating on the trip down, my shoes didn't fit in the first place, and somehow crunched one toe so badly the toenail turned blue and probably is going to fall off. I did my best, despite lacking even shoes that fit, and had a great time.

Well, you gained 2,700 feet on your way to the 5,799 foot summit, so that's quite an accomplishment for someone not used to high elevations (you're probably around 300 feet or so) or long hikes, and isn't really equipped for wilderness travel.
I had to give up steep hikes because of my knees, and, as you noted, it's not the uphill that kills you, but the downhill. If I could have someone helicopter me down, I would go back to climbing in a heartbeat.
It is the downhill that kills the knees! I shocked myself that I could climb that, for being out of shape, I thought. My hiking partner marched right up it. I would get out of breath but recovered quickly and would go on. I really did surprise myself. It was so beautiful. We were just going to go to Pamelia Lake, but then couldn't resist climbing up the peak.
love the pictures~way better of a hiker than i ever will be :) but i can cheer. you look beautiful!! nature is your make-up.
ah I miss the beauty of Oregon...sigh...i've been doing a lot more walking lately and my stamina has increased athousandfold...surprisingly - plus I know I've dropped a few pounds along the way...It has helped my back which surprised me, too. Otherwise, I never would have made it through the weekend at the Otakon convention - there's tons of sitting but the place is huge and connected to the Hilton next door - where some events took place - so all together its like four long city blocks - and of course, one event would be at one end; the next, way at the other. The kids had trouble keeping up with me!
That had to be a ton of fun, Jeanne, for you and your kids. I'm glad you got to go.
It was - we are all huge anime fans and even though financially its a killer this time of year - what with Stephanie's birthday right after it - its so much fun! And we all go autographs of our favourite voice actors and photos with us and them - to be a voice actor is to be a celebrity with privacy! You go to conventions and everyone knows you - you go home - walk the street - no one knows you!
The perfect celebrity career!
