Bed Frame Under Construction

I've been building a bed frame. The paint is left over that I had and not a great color but I do what I can do. The wood needed protection from various cat behaviors. This is one of the four legs. I had no four by four's, so I screwed and glued together two pieces of 2x4. Tonight I'll haul it in and set it up.

Also, I went out this morning to empty the trash and there, in a tied open trap I was set to wash, was a mother possum with babies. Why in the world she was inside an open trap, I don't know. Maybe she smelled old bait or something, then had to give birth. Oh wait, possums are marsupials, aren't they, and give birth to tiny little hairless babes in a pouch? Is that right? So she must have marched in there to have a rest with her babies or something. She did not growl, just stared at me. I went back inside, and when I came back out later, she was gone.

The babies. They are dark in color but you can see those little teeny ears.

  1. She probably got scared trying to get out, overheated from stress, and they came out of the pouch to hang out on her fur. I love opossums, but they really aren't the brightest bulb in the box. :)

  2. Yep, opossums are the Americas only marsupial. The babies are born blind and hairless and very tiny and live in mom's pouch until they've grown, opened their eyes and have hair. Baby opossums are so adorable.

  3. No, they are not very bright. I've had trouble getting them out of traps before. Some won't leave until every scrap has been eaten and some just don't get that they can leave, when it's open, even if I try to lead them out with bits of food. Sometimes I just have to up end the trap to get them out, and even then it can be tough. Often, they'll be back in it within half hour, if I rebait.
