Click post title to go to a letter to the editor by a Lebanon man, promoting government health care. He states that medicare patients choose their doctors while HMOs' appoint them.
Sorry to burst your bubble, Mr., but most doctors won't even take medicare patients. The local medicare HMO's and yes, medicare patients are under HMO's for the most part, choose doctors who will take quotas of the patients nobody else wants, the medicare and medicaid patients, due to low government reimbursement rates.
Often no doctors are taking new patients, let alone no new medicare patients and then you're in limbo if your doctor quits, until a space opens up and somebody will a few medicare patients.
The other disturbing piece of news is the supposedly voluntary police registry of those people designated "nutcases" bill being pushed through the legislature by an Albany legislator. So if the police encounter you, and you're on the registry as a mental case, the pie in the sky theory is they will treat you better or something. Supposedly this will be beneficial to the "mentals" and to the police.
That's baloney. The police knew who the mentals were in Corvallis and preyed upon them sometimes because they knew they were mentals and could get away with it. This won't help anybody. That's the reality. The fuzzy wuzzy pie in the sky everything is beautiful love everyone people have no clue about street reality.
I am a Cat Woman. My self-appointed mission in life is to save the feline world! To accomplish this mission, I get cats fixed. Perhaps my mission might be slightly delusional. This blog is a mishmash of wishful thinking, rants, experiences as I remember them and of course, cat stories and cat photos. I have a nonprofit now, to help keep the cats here cared for and to fix community cats. Happy Cat Club formed in 2015. Currently, we are on a mission to fix 10,000 cats.

I can see it now - Officer BadMan: "hey, don't handcuff her - she's on the nutcase list. We gotta offer her tea and crumpets..."
ReplyDeleteThere are some goooood looking cops out there. Wouldn't mind being patted down by some of them! "Come on, search me! Pleaaassee!"
ReplyDeleteActually, having a nutcase list would have facilitated Hitlers first gas victims: the mentals, many of them abused women and runaways or unwanted wives, unacceptable (to Nazi Germany) religious types, who were sometimes first classed as nutcases, then gassed with the mentals, homos, crips, disableds, unacceptable religions' people often next door to acceptable churches or just off Main street of little German towns. The holocaust included those people, which is rarely mentioned. Many US mental institutions have massive unmarked cemeteries. Many pour souls were experimented on, or, as in Utah, showcased like circus acts in "horror" shows. Union organizers are sometimes sent to company shrinks, paid off by the company to classify them as nutcases and then put on nutcase disability, to get them gone. News coverage of the Fundamentalist Mormon town of Colorado City, where young girls were married off to old men, did not follow the story of women hauled off to the state mental institute by fundamentalist Mormon men cops and committed, at their old man husbands request, because they dared talk back. Now why in the world would a mental institute and its shrinks not see through that, and not admit them? Because psychiatry is subjective and thus full of corruption.
Is someone who talks to themself crazier than those beating and killing young people in Iran right now, or blowing up kids with bombs, or someone taking stipends for attending drug company promotional galas held in say, the Bahamas, then pushing that particular drug on any poor nutcase labeled soul who walks through their door, with a straight face (and money stuffed pockets), regardless of consequences to the poor soul? I say no, but then, I'm nuts! Crazy is a relative term. Very very relative. Often depends on if a shrink is nearby with someone willing to listen.
I'm not saying there are not lots of dangerous people out there. Some carry guns. Some run countries. Some run churches. Taking away civil rights of people labeled subjectively, however, is completely wrong. I'm sure this legislation is well intended. But the well intender does not know what goes on out there, nor the coercion applied to labeled people by the likes of NAMI. There have been incidents in Portland where cops have killed people whom they later found out were autistic or retarded or nuts. But the video inside the police station of the police and the remarks they were making after they beat a man, who ended up dying were significant in that the disrespect displayed shows the manner those cops regarded that man and his life. They already knew he was a nutcase, and the disregard they had for him was because he was one. That was the case for so many I knew in Corvallis. In fact, if someone had to call an ambulance, we used to joke about having to get away from the low income hotel before it was called because otherwise, the stigma attached just to that "project" building, was so great, it came with automatic disrespect from some quarters. Off my soapbox now.
